How to Choose Carrier Tape for SMT Components
Confirm the requirements for your actual component and process before ordering.
Choosing SMD carrier tape starts with the component drawing and the packing line, not tape width alone. Use this checklist to prepare a supplier enquiry and compare sample proposals.
1. Define the component envelope
Supply maximum body length, width and height, including leads, protrusions and dimensional tolerances. Identify the surfaces that may support the part and those that must remain clear. Include the required orientation at pickup. A photograph helps explain the shape but does not replace a dimensioned drawing.
2. Review the pocket and feeder together
Ask the supplier to propose pocket dimensions and clearances against the drawing. Too much movement and a tight fit can both create handling problems; a fixed clearance is not suitable for every component. Confirm pocket pitch, tape width, pocket depth, feed-hole requirements and feeder model as a set. Record the drawing revision used for sample approval.
3. Specify material and electrical requirements separately
The ACE DELIXIN SMD carrier tape product page lists PS, PC and PET options and an 8–88 mm width range. These are configuration options, not a promise that each combination suits your component. Provide your material restrictions and electrical acceptance requirements. A resin name, black color or transparent appearance is not a test report.
4. Include cover tape and reel details
Identify the sealing method, proposed cover tape, reel dimensions and winding direction. Request evaluation on the intended packing and feeding equipment. Matching nominal widths is not sufficient to approve the complete packaging set. See the cover-tape comparison checklist.
5. Approve a loaded sample
- Load actual components and check orientation and lead clearance.
- Run sealing, peeling and feeding trials using agreed settings.
- Check the condition of parts after the handling steps relevant to your process.
- Record the accepted drawing, materials, inspection criteria and change-control requirements.
Send your drawing and packing requirements for a configuration review. Confirm sample cost, tooling, quantity and delivery timing in the quotation rather than assuming a standard promise.
