Storing ESD-Sensitive Components: A Packaging Checklist
Confirm the requirements for your actual component and process before ordering.
Storage instructions should follow the component supplier's requirements and your facility's ESD control plan. A generic humidity number or an ESD label is not a complete storage procedure.
Before putting parts into storage
- Identify the part number, lot and any handling or moisture-sensitivity instructions.
- Confirm that the packaging is approved for the storage location and any movement outside the protected area.
- Inspect closures, pockets, tubes and labels for damage or contamination.
- Keep components identified when splitting a lot or transferring them between containers.
Plan the transfer, not just the shelf
Ask your ESD coordinator whether the package provides the required protection for each stage of the route. EOS/ESD Association guidance distinguishes packaging used inside an EPA from packaging that also needs discharge shielding outside it.
Before reuse
Follow an approved inspection and replacement procedure. Check mechanical fit, closures and required test evidence rather than assuming that an undamaged appearance proves continued suitability. Keep moisture control separate from ESD requirements; one does not automatically establish the other.
