How to Choose IC Packaging Tubes for Electronic Components
IC packaging tubes hold parts in a linear profile for handling, storage or feeding. The useful starting point is the component envelope and loading process. An outside tube dimension is not enough to determine whether a part fits.
Start with a dimensioned component drawing
Identify maximum body size, leads, protrusions and tolerances. Mark the surfaces that may contact the tube and areas that must remain clear. Include the part's orientation during loading and unloading. For an existing packaging problem, add photographs showing where parts jam, turn or contact the profile.
Review the internal profile
Ask for a section drawing that shows how the proposed tube supports the component. Discuss movement, orientation and the entry area without specifying an arbitrary universal clearance. Check the external shape too if tubes must stack or fit an existing rack or feeder.
Select material around the handling requirements
The custom IC packaging tube page lists PVC, PP, HIPS, PETG and PC options. Discuss visibility, rigidity, material restrictions and the required electrical properties separately. Availability of a resin option does not approve every profile, treatment or application.
Check tube length and end closure
Specify the intended loading quantity and usable length, not just an overall length. Ask how the end closure retains the parts and how operators remove it. Consider the effect of the closure on usable space and the actual loading sequence. Do not infer the maximum component count from a catalog photograph.
Approve a sample with real parts
- Compare the sample and proposed drawing revision.
- Load representative components, including relevant dimensional variation.
- Check retention, unloading, lead clearance and any feeder interaction.
- Review the agreed material and electrical evidence separately from the mechanical fit.
- Record the accepted tube, closure and inspection requirements before volume ordering.

Send the component drawing, desired tube length, closure requirements, material preference, applicable acceptance criteria, quantity and destination. State whether tooling and samples should be quoted separately. Request a tube specification review; confirm price and timing in the quotation.
